Morir Soñando (Dominican Orange and Milk Drink)

Die dreaming, not the act of dying, but instead the name of a delicious and refreshing orange and milk juice that is mixed with evaporated milk. It tastes heavenly delicious that it makes you think you're dreaming.

This is a tropical, exotic Dominican juice, ideal for those hot summer afternoons when you crave something refreshing. It's extraordinary and so easy to prepare. It tastes like orange creamsicle, so delicious it will probably make you feel like you can "die dreaming". The traditional sweet orange morir soñando recipe calls for orange juice (store-bought or freshly squeezed), sugar, whole milk and vanilla, very similar to the orange julius of 1929, but in this post I share the bitter orange recipe which is my favorite. It tastes the same but it's just a bit stronger.

WARNING: All this juice has as dangerous is the name, you can confidently drink it. Dream on, you will definitely not die! Enjoy!

Morir Soñando de Naranja Agria
Die Dreaming made with Bitter Orange Juice

Ingredients:
1 ½ cup sour orange juice (6 oranges)
1 ½ cups sugar or to taste
1 cup evaporated milk
2 cups of cold water
2 cups crushed ice
1 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation:
1. Wash oranges well before squeezing.
2. In a pitcher mix orange juice and sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
3. Add cold water to the juice and mix well.
4. In another pitcher mix the milk, vanilla and ice. Stir until combined.
5. Pour the cold milk into the juice pitcher and stir quickly to avoid the milk getting curdled.
6. Mix well and serve chilled at breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack or dinner time.

Yield: 5 -6 cups.

If you are like me and like to make your juice glasses look nice for hubby and kids, and make them love you even more, this is another way to decorate the glass with a fresh orange slice and a cherry inserted on a 4 "(10 cm) BBQ toothpick and placed across the glass. I got this idea from my daughter Crystal.
