Cold Dessert (Dulce Frío)

If you are looking for a delicious dessert that is prepared in five minutes, then you need this  Dominican cold dessert recipe. There is no baking or cooking involved, nor a need for eggs, butter, or flour. It is so eeeeeasy, you'll want to prepare this cold dessert more than once this summer. I recommend it as a project for kids and teens since it is easy to prepare and it will make them feel happy and proud to help mom or dad with dessert. It could be presented as a charlotte with cookies or lady fingers on the side, but I decided to prepare it traditional Dominican style... with fruit cocktail on top.

I learned to prepare this dessert with my sister Miriam when she visited us back in 2006. We were all enchanted by it at home. Over the years I lost the recipe and yesterday I emailed her to verify the measures of the ingredients. I immediately prepared it to satisfy my daughter's request. She wanted dulce frío exactly like her aunt makes it. It was delicious! Thank you dear sister for sharing the recipe.

Normally I prepare the first layer like shown, but my daughter Ruby  wanted it with more cookies. With less cookies the outcome would be moister cookies with abundant cream. If you decide to prepare like Ruby, I recommend you to place a thin layer of cream in the bottom first, then place the cookies/biscuits. Either way is delicious and moist.

Dominican Cold Dessert (Dulce Frío)

Ingredients:
63 Maria biscuits
½ cup lemon juice (4-5 lemons)
1 can (11 oz) evaporated milk (315g) - I use Nestle Carnation
1 can of condensed milk (405g)-I use Nestle la Lechera
1 can fruit cocktail with syrup (850g)

Instructions:
1. In a blender mix the condensed milk and evaporated milk. While blender is on, pour the lemon juice gradually. This will form a thick cream. Add the fruit cocktail syrup and reserve fruit to use later.
2. In a 11x8 inch (28x20 cm) pan or individual bowls placed the first layer of cookies /biscuit. Coat with 1/3 of the cream and proceed to place a second layer of biscuits. Repeat until you have three layers of cookies and cream, ending with the cream.
3. Top with enough fruit to cover completely, cover with aluminum foil or plastic paper and  refrigerate until it is completely cold or even better, leave overnight. Serve cold.

Notes:
a) You can use less cookies, but not less than 45.
b) You can top with fresh fruits like strawberries, peaches, grapes, kiwi, pears and pineapple instead of canned fruits.

Enjoy your fourth of July! Happy Independence Day!

You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’” So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. ~ Romans 14:10-13
